Ronny Chieng

and comedian. Chieng is currently a Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show,
Comedy Central. He is the creator and star on the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student. The show premiered on ABC Australia as well as Comedy
Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was the son of a Malaysian Chinese family. He was
born in Johor Bahru. From 1989 to 1994, Chieng lived in Manchester in New
Hampshire. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in
2013. Chieng was offered the Daily Show's reporter role two years after. He was
named one of the 10 Comics to Watch in Variety's July 2016 issue. In October of
2016, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversy surrounding a
Jesse Watters Fox News segment many thought to be racist. Chieng made
expletive-laden comments about the segment of Fox News, a conservative network.
He also returned to the city's Chinatown. Watters had mocked the Chinese
residents and conducted respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese and
Cantonese. The viral video was featured in Slate and Washington Post. In his
early years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. He has not been able to gain
citizenship or permanent residence status in Australia despite having lived in
Australia for ten years. In 2018, Chieng joked that he was an apologist during
the Daily Show and later stated in an interview that he was "100 percent
sure of dogs".
